Blow Molded Solutions LLC will start production this year of a line of 3-gallon to 25-gallon plastic nursery containers in Mayodan, N.C., founder and general manager Scott McNeil said in a Jan. 4 telephone interview.
The town and county will give the company $28,500 in property tax refunds over three years, starting in 2102. Blow Molded Solutions received $12,800 in support from Mayodan and $15,700 from Rockingham County to start the business, McNeil said. In exchange, Blow Molded Solutions must employ 19 and invest $1 million in building improvements and equipment by the end of 2010.
McNeil acknowledged that it’s still a dicey time to undertake a new venture, given that the economic recovery still hasn’t lifted off across the U.S.
“It’s definitely a faith thing,” he said of the new company. “It’s a good time and a bad time.”
Blow Molded Solutions will employ about 10 in a leased building, processing high density polyethylene in both virgin and recycled resins. McNeil said. “We hope to have about 65 percent of our materials in post-consumer and post-industrial recycled HDPE,” he said.
In addition to the nursery pots, the firm will do custom blow molding, he said.
McNeil worked for seven years for WhiteRidge Plastics LLC of Reidsville, N.C., and was general manager there before Akron, Ohio-based Myers Industries Inc. acquired WhiteRidge in 2007 (McNeil left the company in September). WhiteRidge blow molds plastic cases, dock floats and nursery containers, and does custom molding.
